AMERICAN STORIES: From Revolution to Rockwell

Jim Schantz’s work seeks to balance two realms; the environment and the spirit. Long drawn to river landscapes in changing seasons and light, the artist has found the Housatonic River to be a source of inspiration and hope. Offering a place for reflection and contemplation, it is also a metaphor for our journey through life.

Schantz has created a series of works capturing the beauty of the Housatonic River, where indigenous people began fishing and hunting at least 6,000 years ago. By 1600, the inhabitants were mostly Mohican, who hold a deep reverence for nature. The river’s name is derived from the Mohican phrase “usi-a-di-en-uk”, which is translated as “beyond the mountain place” or “river of the mountain place.”

The Housatonic River enters Stockbridge on the east side of town before turning south toward Connecticut. Once threatened by PCB pollution, the river has begun to recover through environental efforts led by the Housatonic River Initiative, becoming a stronger habitat for wildlife. Rivers sustain life, support healthy ecosystems, and remind us to remain vigilant in safeguarding our natural resources.

Jim has been represented by Pucker Gallery since 1988, and feels a strong friendship with Bernie and Sue Pucker and the staff there. Jim's 2025 exhibition Inspired Transcendence featured an Artist Talk which is available below, and on the Pucker Gallery website. Through Bernie Puckers thoughtful insight, this WebinART was an opportunity to discuss Jim Schantz's latest collection of new work. With Nature as his inspiration, he continues to present the natural world in all her poetic splendor.

PERFORMANCE

Jim Schantz joined the Hawthorne String Quartet and created a painting inspired by the groups performance of Czech composer Hans Krása. HSQ members are Ronan Lefkowitz, Si-Jing Huang, and Mark Ludwig (violinists), and Sato Knudsen (cello). Read more…
